*Kōwhaiwhai are Māori motifs. Each pattern tells a story and have a meaning relating to the land and sea. Kowhaiwhai patterns are traditionally painted in whare tipuna (meeting houses), pataka (storehouses), on the prow of a waka (canoe) and on many forms of carving such as boat paddles
